2024 mysteries

So much about the writing process is mysterious, and requires us to cede control and trust that our intuition knows the way, much like life. This year I want to lean into mystery, let go of expectations and feed my curiosity.

I’ve been accepted in the Faber Academy’s Novel Writing course with Carrie Tiffany, and I can’t wait to dive in and get stuck into book number two under the guidance of such a talented writer. Hopefully I’ll have a completed first draft ready to edit by the end.

I’m especially keen to chat with Carrie about her writing process (hopefully on The Book Shelf as well), as this quote from an interview with The Garret podcast really resonates with me and mine:

“I don’t write every day… In terms of process I think each particular novel is its own problem, and you have to wrestle with it and find your own way with it. If you really want to do it you’re going to do it. People make excuses about having the perfect job to support the writing, or having the perfect place to write… None of that is ever going to happen. If it’s important to you then you just need to plug away at it. A lot of writing happens when I’m not writing. Just noticing – being out in the world in a way where you don’t get noticed, but where you can notice other people. Being a bit of a spy. Seeking situations where you can hang back and be in the world in a very quiet way.”

I’m so excited to see what hidden treasures 2024 brings forth.

I also must acknowledge the wonderful Regional Arts Fund for the Quick Response Grant I’ve received, which will help me pay for the Faber Academy course fees. The assistance of the Regional Arts Fund, Regional Arts Australia and RANT is invaluable to so many. You can find out more about what they offer here

I hope 2024 is everything you wish it to be. May you all have the courage to say yes to the things that light fires in your hearts, and the confidence to say no to those that don’t. And always remember that rest is not something that needs to be earned. Nap as often as you need without guilt. And go exploring as much as possible. I’m planning on finding more Rapunzel towers like this one on the Isle of Skye…
